Chocolate Peppermint Stars


  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 oz bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup finely crushed candy canes


  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
  2. Sift flour, cocoa and salt into medium bowl
  3. Beat butter and sugar in large bowl until smooth.
  4. Beat in vanilla.
  5. Add dry ingredients and beat until dough holds together.
  6. Divide dough in half and shape each piece into a disk.
  7. Wrap in plastic and chill for at least 45 minutes (up to 1 day).
  8. Roll out 1 disk on floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness and cut cookies with star cutter.
  9. Place on baking sheets, 1 inch apart and gather scraps to chill until firm again.
  10. Bake cookies about 25 minutes and cool on sheets for 10 minutes.
  11. Transfer to racks and cool completely.
  12. Stir chocolate in small metal bowl set over saucepan of barely simmering water until smooth.
  13. Using small spoon, drizzle chocolate over cookies in zigzag lines and sprinkle with crushed candy canes.
  14. Drizzle remaining chocolate over cookies.
  15. Let stand until chocolate is set, at least 1 hour.
